What is CFP Certification?

CFP certification has been the standard of excellence for financial advisers in Australia for more than 30 years. Over 230,000 professionals in 28 countries and territories have met rigorous competency, ethics and practice standards and CFP certification requirements, qualifying them to develop financial planning strategies that assist clients in achieving their financial and life goals.

In Australia the FAAA is the only association who is licensed to deliver the CFP program. The FAAA partners with the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), who own the CFP marks outside of the United States.

The CFP certification is a prestigious professional designation that signifies competence in the financial planning field. Unlike qualifications, which are awarded for completing a course of study, designations like the CFP certification are earned through practical experience and ongoing learning.

The FAAA awards this designation to those who meet the requirements. To maintain your CFP certification, you need to keep your FAAA membership active and fulfill ongoing requirements. If your membership lapses, you will lose your CFP certification status, and after five years, you will need to recertify to regain it.

What is the format of the CFP Certification Unit?

In Australia we offer two forms of the CFP certification – a practising CFP credential for those who are registered on the Financial Advisers Register, and a non-practising CFP credential for those who are working in a planning role but are not registered on the FAR. The only difference is in the third component below.

Assignment

This component requires you to write a 55-page financial plan for a fictitious client based on a case study. You will be provided with a template and marking sheet to help you understand how the assignment will be graded. Statement of advice software is not required.

Exam

The exam is open book and completed online via FAAA Learn. It consists of 70 multiple choice questions that cover technical knowledge areas categorised by the Financial Planning Standards Boards knowledge domains. Participants have four hours to complete and an additional 15 minutes reading time.

Experience

If you are on the FAR the experience component is two client meetings (a fact find and presentation of plan) where an assessor of your choosing (not a family member or another current candidate) assesses your behaviours.

If you are not on the FAR – the experience component is a register of 20 activities and a letter of good standing.  If you complete via this pathway and then become registered on the FAR (for 12 months) you can complete the client observation assessment component to become a practicing CFP professional.

You can opt to complete the three assessments in a single semester, or you can choose to spread the assessments over a calendar year from the semester you enrol in the program.
